Implant bone grafting in Dallas

Bone grafting on dental implants, also known as implant site bone grafting or implant-related bone augmentation, is a surgical procedure performed to augment the bone volume and density in areas where dental implants are planned to be placed. It is typically done when there is insufficient bone quantity or quality to support the successful placement and long-term stability of dental implants.

When a tooth is lost or extracted, the surrounding bone may undergo resorption or atrophy over time. This can result in a reduced bone volume, which may not provide adequate support for dental implants. Bone grafting on dental implants aims to rebuild the deficient bone structure, creating a solid foundation for the implant placement.

The periodontist will perform a thorough examination, including 3D dental imaging, to assess the amount and quality of available bone in the implant site. This evaluation helps determine the appropriate bone grafting technique and materials required. If only a small volume of bone is necessary, your periodontist may be able to complete the bone graft concurrently with dental implant placement.

The bone graft material is secured in place using small screws, membranes, or other techniques to maintain its position during healing. This promotes optimal integration of the graft with the surrounding bone. Additional procedures and materials, such as growth factors, may be used to provide sufficient and ample bone healing.

The bone graft material serves as a scaffold, encouraging the growth of new bone cells. The graft material is gradually replaced by the patient's own bone through a process called osseointegration. Over time, this integration results in the formation of a strong and stable bone structure and foundation for dental implants.

The periodontist will assess the readiness of the bone for dental implant placement with intraoral examination and 3D dental imaging. Once the bone has sufficiently healed and integrated, typically after 12 – 24 weeks, dental implants can be surgically placed into the augmented bone.

Bone grafting on dental implants enhances the success and long-term stability of dental implant treatment. It provides a solid foundation for the implants and promotes the natural integration of the implants with the surrounding bone. Proper post-operative care, including regular dental visits and maintenance therapy, is essential to ensure the long-term success of the bone grafting and implant treatment.
